Glusburn Institute

Picture
Glusburn Community & Arts Centre, known locally as Glusburn Institute, is a volunteer-led community arts venue. It hosts a range of weekly classes and activities for the community as well as a programme of events, concerts and theatre in the wonderful proscenium arch theatre space. Glusburn Institute is managed by a dedicated team of trustees, and a small team of paid staff to ensure the smooth running of the day-to-day programme of activities and events.
The Glusburn Institute team were keen to capture and showcase learning and impacts of the weekly classes and activities on those that participate. As such, they commissioned Nifty Sustainability and Bright Impact to develop a snapshot impact report and ongoing monitoring tool. We did this through a ‘Feedback Week’ where all those involved in the different groups and activities were invited to complete a short survey either by hand on a postcard or digitally through a QR code. We also had the pleasure of attending many of the groups, taking part in the activities and engaging participants in informal chats about their experiences.
We heard from over 120 people and we were pleased to report back to the team that Glusburn Institute:
  • provides a friendly, welcoming and inclusive community hub with overwhelmingly positive feedback about the services.
  • strengthens community connections by bringing people together across ages and interests through the wide range of well-organised and well-managed activities.
  • improves wellbeing through reducing loneliness, supporting mental health and encouraging physical activity.
  • creates opportunities for personal growth through learning, volunteering and building confidence.
  • provides an accessible, high-quality local resource that people are proud of and rely on as an important part of community life.

THE PEOPLE WE WORK WITH SAY:

‘Claire’s knowledge of the University, sustainability, research and learning techniques was invaluable for the delivery of this successful project. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with her through this project and look forward to the roll out and next phase where we are hoping to collaborate once again.' Katie McGuire, Deputy Director of Sustainability Services.
