Restoring Hardknott Forest: exploring the social benefits of nature restoration projects

Restoring Hardknott Forest is an existing partnership between the University of Leeds and Forestry England. The project is working to restore a 630-hectare former conifer plantation to native woodland and other habitats, for the benefit of people, nature and climate. The project hosts regular volunteer events, school visits and tours of the site but, while environmental monitoring of the project is well-established, the social benefits of volunteering are less well known. As such, we're supporting the project to better understand these impacts and build capacity in their team to embed evaluation in their volunteering events.

THE PEOPLE WE WORK WITH SAY:

‘Claire’s knowledge of the University, sustainability, research and learning techniques was invaluable for the delivery of this successful project. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with her through this project and look forward to the roll out and next phase where we are hoping to collaborate once again.' Katie McGuire, Deputy Director of Sustainability Services.
